Columbus police are searching for the driver of a car that struck and killed one man and injured two others Tuesday before fleeing the scene along Interstate 270.
Rafat Juaidi, 54, died after being struck by a car on the shoulder of southbound I-270 north of East Main Street, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Juaidi was standing next to his Mercedes Benz on the shoulder when a beige 2008 to 2012 Chevrolet Malibu hit him, police said. The impact knocked Juaidi into the Mercedes and then into two adults standing in front.
Columbus Division of Fire paramedics took Juaidi and the other two adults to Mount Carmel East Hospital. Juaidi was pronounced dead there at 10:31 pm
The other adults suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Columbus Police Sgt. Joe Albert said in an email that it was unclear why the Mercedes was stopped on the shoulder. The Chevrolet Malibu left the scene without stopping, he said. Police said they identified the Malibu from parts left at the crash scene.
Anyone with information about the crash can contact Columbus police at 614-645-4767 or provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
